This series examines the career of Louis H. Sullivan in four phases, from his youth and education through the mature and late periods, examining the evolution of this great theorist's concept of integrating nature and design. More than any other architect of his time, Sullivan sought and successfully realized a synthesis of the seemingly opposed forces of modern, industrial technology with America's heritage of living in concert with nature. His ideas, which have since had a profound and continuing influence on global architecture, will be examined in depth.

INSTRUCTOR Tim Wittman, architectural historian

Chicago has the most beautiful skyline in North America, perhaps the world. Students will learn how to rapidly document the buildings in their own graphic vocabulary, interior and exterior. The class will stress a formulaic approach to developing exceptional compositions using thumbnail diagrams and basic, non-technical perspective. Emphasis will be placed on loose, free hand drawing techniques in lieu of technical drawing. This class is appropriate for beginners with no experience. Class time is spent mostly outdoors—please dress accordingly.

CLASS MATERIALS (students should purchase before start of class) Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards; pencils – 4H/H/HB/B/2B/4B; pencil sharpener; pens; white eraser; 9"x12” spiral or loose bound sketch pad.

INSTRUCTOR Joel Berman, ALA, of Joel Berman Architecture & Design, Ltd.
