a former Wicker Park tavern into a live/work space and corporate
office for the owners of Smog Veil Records. The project employed
multiple sustainable features, including on-site power generation,
a rooftop garden, geothermal heating and cooling, and other environmentally-friendly
finishes. The project received a Green Roof Grant, a Green Building
Permit from the City of Chicago, and recently received LEED®
for Homes Certification, one of the first in Illinois.

The GreenHouse Chicago was conceived as a sustainable model for
urban living, a demonstration project for green technologies and
an imaginative adaptive reuse of an outmoded industrial structure.
This live/work space for artists Frances Whitehead and Jim Elniski
employs numerous systems, including wind turbines, geothermal
heating and cooling, solar panels, a green roof and a rooftop
greenhouse. Among the first of its kind in Chicago, the project
was partially funded by the City of Chicago and the State of Illinois,
and has evolved to represent "the complete set" of available
systems, amenities and ethical design principles.
