Narrated by Tonika Lewis Johnson, the Folded Map film delves into the childhood curiosities and experiences that Tonika had as she "traveled through Chicago's segregation." These experiences led to the creation of the Folded Map Project which visually connects residents who live at corresponding addresses on the North and South Sides of Chicago. In the film, Tonika investigates what urban segregation looks like and how it impacts Chicago residents. What started as a photographic study quickly evolved into a multimedia exploration with video interviews of residents. The project invites audiences to open a dialogue and question how we are all socially impacted by racial and institutional conditions that segregate the city.

Following the film, there will be a Talk Back Discussion with Folded Map creator Tonika Lewis Johnson moderated by Sara Faddah and Dario Durham of the 77 Flavors of Chicago Podcast.

Folded Map Creator: Tonika Lewis Johnson

Tonika Johnson is a photographer, social justice artist, and life-long resident of Chicago's South Side Englewood neighborhood. Her work reveals injustices and inequities in real estate and land use practices, including historic preservation, and encourages us to reevaluate and create positive change.

Her ongoing project, Folded Map, visually investigates disparities among segregated Chicago residents while bringing them together to have a conversation. Her "Inequity For Sale" project highlights the living history of Greater Englewood homes sold on discriminatory Land Sale Contracts in the 50's and 60's.
